While most mattresses look the same from the outside, the difference is in the details of the layers inside. This video takes us on a tour of what is inside a mattress. It also provides tips on what you should know before you make your next mattress purchase.

When you walk into a mattress store, you likely notice that all the white rectangles look the same. You probably then sit on a few and think they feel similar as well. Because of this, you might be tricked into thinking that mattresses are, for the most part, all the same. This could not be further from the truth.
What is true is that if you have the exact same comfort layer on the top of two mattresses, they will feel the same—but only at first. Over time, it’s what’s below that layer—on the inside in the lower layers—that will make all the difference. Regardless of the comfort layer on top, the wrong unit or the wrong type of foam on the bottom will not support you for long…and support, the part you can’t really see, feel, or compare on your own, is actually the most critical component to a great night’s sleep.
Ultimately, the internal components that comprise that supportive base create vast differences between mattresses, even when they look and feel exactly alike. If you aren’t aware of this, and if you don’t have an educated expert to explain it to you, it becomes easy to make a purchase for the wrong reasons. For example, purchasing the cheaper of two choices simply because why spend more on something that “seems” exactly the same? Don’t get us wrong—the cheaper one might ultimately be best for you! However, that should be determined based on your needs, and not because you aren’t informed of the actual differences between choices.
For additional help when considering mattress options, follow these simple suggestions by Better Sleep Magazine to select the mattress of your dreams:
Select a mattress.
Lie down in your typical sleep position.
Evaluate the level of comfort and support.
Educate yourself about each selection.
Partners should test beds together.
