Pros and Cons of Full-Size Mattresses

Considering a full-size mattress? Below are some of the most common pros and cons we share with customers who are deciding between a full-size mattress or a different size.

Full-size mattress pros

  • The space-efficiency of a twin but with a little extra room for sleepers who tend move
  • Long enough for the majority of adults
  • Typically less expensive than queens, kings, etc.
  • Wide selection of mattress types available
  • Room for your pet!
  • Great for teens who want an upgrade from a twin mattress

Full-size mattress cons

  • Too short for most people over 6 feet tall
  • Typically considered too narrow for two people, although it may work in a pinch
  • Despite its relatively small size, it may still be too big for some dorms and guest rooms

Full-Size Mattress Dimensions

The standard dimensions for a full-size mattress are 53 x 75 inches (134.5 x 190.5 cm). Size wise, this places a full-size mattress (also called a “double”) in between a twin mattress (38 x 75 inches) and a queen (60 x 80 inches).

Like your standard twin-size mattress (which is the same length as a full) someone who is 6 feet tall (72 inches) can technically sleep on this size of mattress, but may feel somewhat constricted by the length.

However, a full-size mattress does provide extra width, which is ideal for sleepers who tend to toss and turn. If you or your loved one has been feeling cramped in your twin size bed, a full-size mattress may be able to give you enough additional space for a good night’s sleep.

Full mattresses are often ideal for the following spaces:

  • Beds for your child or teenager (especially if they’re a restless sleeper)
  • Apartment bedrooms
  • Guest beds and daybeds
  • Adults who sleep alone or with a pet

People taller than 6 feet will likely have their feet dangle off of the bed. If you are a single sleeper looking for a bed that takes up minimal floor space but accommodates a taller sleeper, you may benefit from a twin XL mattress (39 x 80 inches, 96.5 x 203.5 cm). These mattresses are the same width as standard twins but are five inches longer.

If you’re part of a couple and are looking for additional width and length, we recommend going a size up and searching for a queen-size mattress.

What is the Average Cost of a Full-Size Mattress?

A good starting price point for a full mattress is around $650. Keep in mind that the price will vary depending on the type mattress you purchase. A full-size hybrid mattress, for example, will almost always be less expensive than a full-size latex mattress.

If you purchase your mattress at Texas Mattress Makers, you get the benefit of missing out on overhead costs, no matter what type of mattress you purchase. All our mattresses are handmade in-house.

Buying Considerations for Find the Best Full-Size Mattress for You

1. Your sleeping position

Your sleeping position often plays a large role in what type of mattress you find comfortable. In other words, the best full-size mattress a side sleeper has different properties than the best full-size mattress for a back or stomach sleeper.

To understand why, consider the different ways a body comes in contact with a mattress when sleeping in different positions. If you sleep on your stomach, for example, your hips will act as your support, so you will likely want a firmer mattress to keep your hips from sinking and your lower back from bowing.

If you sleep on your side, however, your shoulders and hips will be pressing into the mattress, so you will likely want a softer mattress to provide you with pressure relief.

Purchasing a full-size mattress for a guest bed? Unless you have a frequent guest who has special sleeping needs, your best bet is to invest in a mattress that has supportive qualities for multiple sleeping positions.

2. Firmness and support

One of the most frequently misunderstood aspects of mattress shopping is the difference between firmness and support. Firmness relates to the feel of the mattress (soft, medium, firm, etc.) while support refers to the amount of support your body will receive as you sleep.

For example, we often greet customers who state that they want a “firm” mattress when really what they want is a mattress that provides extra support. In reality, you can have one soft mattress and one firm mattress that are equally supportive.

So if you’ve been wishing for a soft mattress but living under the impression that’s just not in the cards for you – good news! Texas Mattress Makers can help you find a full-size mattress that meets your support needs and your preference for feel (firmness).

3. Mattress type

If you’ve never purchased a new mattress before, you might not have expected to be confronted with so many mattress types. Each of these mattress types has its own set of pros and cons, depending on what you like in a mattress.

Depending on how particular you want to be about your mattress, you may wish to vet each type of mattress for its typical level of responsiveness, its amount of contouring and pressure relief, it’s ability to provide temperature control (breathability), and its overall feel.

Even if you’re used to one particular kind of mattress, we encourage you to take a look into your other options. Mattress technology continues to evolve along with other technologies, and you may be pleasantly surprised to find that an issue you’ve had with a certain type of mattress has been resolved.
