Thinking of buying a mattress online? What you need to know first.
There is a current trend in mattress buying that you’ve probably heard of—that is, online purchasing of a “one size fits all” sleep surface. You might have even considered this option, or be wondering whether or not it would work for you. Here is our take.
We know that in the early 2000s, large mattress manufacturers began to scale at a higher volume. This meant that mattresses began being produced at an overall lower quality. This lead to mattresses becoming much more standardized to fit ALL bodies, regardless of what is best for YOUR body.
Since then, companies have also begun to play off of consumer feelings towards mattress buying, which we recognize isn’t always positive—as described here by Bed Times Magazine.
The problem is, both of these factors have led to mattress purchasing becoming much more about convenience than quality. We are confident this is a mistake.
You need to know that your body is unique, and what fits best for you is not the same as what fits best for everyone. What will make YOU most comfortable and help you get your best night’s sleep is specific to you, so you should have a customized sleep surface for your body. In conclusion, one size does NOT fit all when it comes to mattresses.
But, don’t just take it from us.
According to a recent story published on BBC:
“It goes beyond physical health. Now we see how sleep affects psychological health and every aspect of our lives. I think people are finally sitting up – or waking up – and taking notice,” said sleep clinician Terry Cralle. “99.9% of patients who walk through my door ask me about mattresses. It’s critically important to sleep quality. It’s a performance tool.”
However, she says there’s no such thing as one size fits all. Finding the perfect mattress depends on body size, age, who you’re sleeping with and any pre-existing health conditions or injuries.
Example: The three body types and sleep styles below have different sleep surface requirements if they are truly going to sleep their best. Ideally, the mattress conforms to each unique shape and way that a person lies. This provides proper support where your weight is naturally distributed. To accomplish this, each body type shown will require a mattress that has different materials than the other two body types. Naturally, this cannot be accomplished if the three people purchase the same one-size-fits-all mattress online.
