Studies have shown that poor sleep is a large contributor to mental health problems like anxiety, depression, and chronic stress. How does lack of sleep affect the brain? When we sleep, our brain performs many processes and cycles that help to regulate our emotional and physical health. While these mental health problems can look different to each individual, the bottom line is that without sufficient sleep, our brains can’t function properly throughout the day.

Sleep allows your body to fulfill all of the necessary regulatory processes that keep your body functioning and healthy. If those processes get interrupted consistently…well, things will stop working.
For example, sleep deprivation causes your body to become less efficient at using insulin which can result in an increased risk of developing Type 2 diabetes from high blood sugar levels. These chronic conditions will impact your quality of life, are expensive to treat and manage, and can be fatal in certain cases. Overall, it’s not good.
Sleep and libido go hand-in-hand with mental health. Your brain is responsible for regulating all of your sex hormones to ensure they stay balanced for a healthy sex drive.
Chronic sleep deprivation lowers the body’s estrogen and testosterone levels, decreasing your desire for sex overall. Exhaustion coupled with declining mental health can severely impact your ability to be emotionally and physically intimate with a partner. The long-term effects of that could hurt your relationship and self-esteem.
