Your perfect mattress can be a big investment, so knowing how to clean a dirty mattress can be a huge time and money-saver.

Contrary to popular belief, a few stains here and there are not signs your mattress is bad, they are just a part of life. You sleep on your bed every night, after all! But there are stubborn stains that have been cleaned, and then there’s stuff that builds up over time, like dust, dirt, dead skin, hair, fur, and sweat. This stuff does need to be taken care of.

So if you’re wondering, “How do you deep clean a mattress?” we’ve got the tips and tricks for you.

Want to avoid getting your mattress dirty in the first place? Consider purchasing a mattress protector that can protect your mattress from dirt and dust. We recommend purchasing a mattress protector that is made of breathable material like cotton so you can avoid getting hot while you sleep. Be sure to wash it every other time you wash your sheets or every two weeks! For more information, check out our article on how to protect your mattress!

Why is Cleaning your Mattress Important?

Letting dirt and body fluids fester in your mattress can increase wear and tear on your mattress. It is a general rule of thumb that it’s a good idea to clean your current mattress at minimum twice a year to keep it fresh and prevent damage or infestations.

With that said, keep in mind that the overall lifespan of your mattress depends on how the mattress is made and how well it is taken care of at home. For example, our Quantum Coil mattresses are built with first-rate materials that are highly resilient and can last for a lifetime if taken care of properly

It’s important to note that most mattress warranties will not cover mattress defects caused by liquid, so taking good care of your mattress and protecting it will allow you to keep your mattress for much longer.

How Do You Deep Clean a Mattress?

Home remedies for cleaning a dirty mattress

The path to a clean mattress might just begin with items you can find in your kitchen cabinet. Items such as baking soda and vinegar can be used as all-natural cleaning agents for your dirty mattress. Distilled white vinegar can be used to pull stains out, while baking soda will soak up the vinegar and eliminate odors. We’ll get into step-by-step instructions in a minute.

And important notes about cleaning different mattress types

When learning how to clean a dirty mattress, you first need to discover the best ways to clean your mattress. Just as all mattresses are not one-size-fits-all, not all cleaning solutions will work for every mattress. For example, if you have a memory foam mattress, try to use as little moisture as possible when lifting a stain. Instead, simply spot treat any stains to keep it clean. Clean your Dirty Mattress in Just 4 Steps

Now that we’ve discussed the importance of keeping your mattress clean, here’s how to do it:

  • Step 1:Strip your bed of all sheets, pillows, and blankets. While you’re at it, you might as well clean these too for a fully fresh bed.
  • Step 2: Get rid of any stains using distilled white vinegar. If the stain is fresh, be sure to blot (not push) the stain with a paper towel to remove as much liquid as possible. Next, use a spray bottle to spray the vinegar directly onto the stain. Let that sit for at least 5-10 minutes minimum in a well-ventilated area.
  • Step 3: Absorb the vinegar with baking soda. Sprinkle the baking soda all over the stain and the surface of the mattress and let that sit for several hours. The baking soda will soak up the vinegar and any odors coming from the mattress.
  • Step 4: Vacuum the mattress. Thoroughly vacuum the mattress a few times through to make sure that all of the baking soda is gone.
