Truth about the “Lowest Mattress Price Guarantee”

The Challenge: Paying a Fair Price for a Mattress

Walking into a mattress store can be daunting. After all, each mattress for all appearances is not unlike any of the other upholstered rectangles which line the room. This presents a unique challenge for consumers as they attempt to determine the value of one mattress from the next – a struggle many mattress retailers tirelessly exploit.

Lowest Mattress Price Guarantee

This marketing tactic is designed to provide the warm cozy feeling of satisfaction at the notion of getting the best deal possible. Even if the price lowers in the next three months – which is also covered – the Lowest Price Guarantee is surprising easy for the mattress retailer to back up. The secret? Mattress retailers almost never carry the same mattress. At least not in a capacity that the customers could easily determine.

Mattress manufacturers purposefully provide  retailers with what is often the same exact mattress using a different name and fabric covering so their customers cannot comparison shop their competitors. Even if the mattress offers little to no difference beneath the fabric there would be no way for shoppers to really know because mattress descriptions do not provide the specifics of the internal components. The result? Customers will never see the same mattress in another store for a lower price. Major retailers can offer a “Lowest Price Guarantee” with little financial risk with the simple switch of one soothing mattress name to another. Beating the competition’s price is a breeze when the competition doesn’t appear to offer the same products. (Makes you wonder how many times the same mattress has been revamped with a new cover and a higher price!)

How to Get the Best Mattress Value

In an industry where each product is difficult to distinguish from another it is little wonder that this tactic continues to work. So how do you get around it?

1. Do your research. Shop at a store which offers the transparency needed to make a qualified decision on your mattress selection. Check customer reviews, ask previous patrons of the stores about their experience, and read more about the company on their website.

2. Focus on your budget rather than price. The price of the mattress should not be a determining factor for your mattress purchase. Many stores use tactics such as a “Low Price Guarantee” or a special promotion to lure shoppers into feeling confident about the value of their purchase. Discounts can be misleading because an everyday low price can be lower than a similar mattress which is offered at 70% off in another store. Avoid the lure of a seemingly well priced mattress deal by shopping only the mattresses within your budget with your sleep needs in the forefront of your mind.

3. Go beyond comfort. In addition to comfort, you should consider the following: How will this bed wear over time? How long will it last? Does this mattress provide the proper support needed for my body type? Take your time to shop around and ask questions and discuss your needs, especially if you have any special needs or particular issues.

2. Get to know what you’re buying and why. Don’t  be afraid to ask what the difference is between the quality of one mattress and another. It is not necessary (and sometimes it’s just too overwhelming!) to learn the specifics of every material in the mattress but the sales associate should be able to provide quality information rather than speaking purely in general terms.
