What is a slatted bed base? Why isn’t it recommended as a mattress base?

A slatted bed base features wooden slats running across the frame to support your mattress. While slats allow for airflow underneath the mattress, they can cause problems if spaced too far apart or made from wood that flexes under pressure. Uneven support from slats often leads to a sagging mattress and uncomfortable pressure points. Can I put my mattress on the floor?
