When you go into a mattress store, you likely have a sense of what you want.  You might know you want something “firm”, “supportive”, or “plush”.  All of these terms describe the way a mattress feels to you, and feel should equal comfort.  Right?

Wrong.  While feel certainly matters, it is not the only thing you should consider when making a mattress purchase. It’s also about the fill. For example, many different components can achieve a “firm” feel. However, the way these various components perform over time determines how comfortable the mattress really is for you.  What truly matters is how the comfort layer is supported.

As this article helps illustrate, “… a mattress that reduces the pressure points on your body should give you a better night’s sleep.”  As demonstrated in the video, a mattress that doesn’t fill in the gaps behind a person’s knees and lower back isn’t providing proper support. This is a problem, even though she “feels” comfortable at the time!

The hard part is, when you lay on a mattress at a store, you won’t usually know or be told what the foundation is.  Without considering this, you might wind up with a mattress that felt comfortable for the few minutes you laid on it, but won’t feel comfortable long-term. This is why it is so important to shop with true mattress experts.
