Home How to Choose a Mattress Twin Sized Mattress
BUYING GUIDE
Looking for the best twin mattress for you? You may be surprised by the variety of twin mattresses out there. Despite being the smallest standard mattress size, twin mattresses are the primary size of bed for a number of different situations and are thus designed to meet a variety of needs.
These smaller mattresses are perfect for kids and guest rooms.
Twin
38” x 75”
Twin XL
38” x 80”
Not only that, but their smaller size makes them ideal for all types of spaces, while their lower price point also makes them ideal for short-term solutions (dorm beds), growing children, and more.
As a result, it can sometimes feel a little overwhelming to find the best twin mattress for your needs. That’s where Texas Mattress Makers comes in. Discover everything you need to know about twin-sized mattresses, from pricing to dimensions to other important buying considerations.
Deciding between a twin mattress and another size of mattress? These are the top twin mattress pros and cons to keep in mind while shopping.
Your standard twin mattress size is 38 x 75 inches (96.5 x 190.5 cm). Someone who is 6 feet (72 inches) tall can technically sleep on this size of mattress, but may feel somewhat constricted.
Twin mattresses are often ideal for the following:
Sleepers who are taller than 6 feet will likely have their feet dangle off of the bed, which most sleepers find uncomfortable.
Taller sleepers, therefore, may benefit from a twin XL mattress (38 x 80 inches, 96.5 x 203.5 cm). These mattresses are the same width as standard twins but come with a few extra inches in length. Twin XL mattresses are growing in popularity, especially for college dorm beds. Since twin XL mattresses do not provide additional width, they are still not ideal for couples.
Couples looking for a bed that fits within a smaller space but is big enough for two people may have better luck with full size mattresses (which may still be a bit cramped) or queen size mattress.
How much should a good twin mattress cost? Typically, a good starting price point for a twin mattress is around $500; our top-selling hybrid twin mattresses start at $319 (with our open coil twin mattresses for children starting at $169). From there, the price will vary depending on the type of material used in the mattress’s construction, which in turn impacts the support and comfort of the mattress. Keep in mind that when buying a brand-name mattress at a typical retailer, you may pay extra for the brand.
Texas Mattress Makers creates our own handmade mattresses, so customers who purchase a mattress with us get to miss out on this extra overhead cost. To stay on top of our mattress sales, consider joining our email list.
Knowing your preferred sleeping position (back, side, stomach, or combination) can really help narrow down what mattress will be most comfortable for you. For example, someone who sleeps on their stomach will typically prefer a mattress that provides extra support, while a side sleeper often prefers a mattress that provides pressure relief.
If you’re purchasing a mattress for a guest bed, you’ll likely want to purchase a mattress that makes provisions for multiple sleeping positions (unless you have a frequent guest with special sleeping needs).
Firmness and support are often conflated in discussions about mattresses, but are actually two separate things. Firmness relates to the feel of the mattress (soft, medium, firm, etc.) while support refers to the amount of support your body will receive as you sleep.
Frequently, people assume that all firm mattresses are supportive, while all soft mattresses aren’t. In reality you can have one soft mattress and one firm mattress that are equally supportive.
So, when looking for your best twin mattress, make sure you know both your preferences for feel (firmness) as well as your support needs.
At Texas Mattress Makers, we are often asked questions along the lines of “What is the most comfortable twin mattress?” And as with all questions related to mattress comfort, the answer depends on who is sleeping on the mattress. Everyone has their own preferences and needs when it comes to contouring, responsiveness, pressure relief, temperature control (breathability), and overall feel.
